1.  AIMS & OBJECTIVES

This course is designed for non-Chinese students who do not have any prior knowledge of modern Chinese language. It will introduce a variety of situation-dependant language knowledge in modern Chinese through textbook materials and situational conversations, including the system of Chinese Phonetics (pinyin), basic grammar, characters, and, the most important, conversations. With the completion of this course, students will be able to use oral skills necessary for communication in everyday practical situations .They will also be able to learn around 300 new words.

2.  COURSE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (CILOS)

CILO

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

CILO 1

Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concept of the Chinese language structures.

CILO 2

Read and pronounce the phonetic symbols in Chinese, which are calledPin-Yin in China; distinguish the differences between the four tones in Chinese, and articulate each of the four tones.

CILO 3

Be able to carry out simple conversation in Chinese with a limited range of topics, engage in basic conversation Chinese with respect and regard to cultural differences listed in Course Objectives.

CILO 4

Better understanding of Chinese, so that they can recognize and write approximately 300 commonly Chinese words.
